The City Varieties Theatre, which in its 158-year history has seen the best of entertainment and boy did this show, live up to earn its place amongst the very best.
Set against the backdrop of the original traditional Robin Hood story, we met Robin and his band of outlaws, the beautiful Maid Marion and the dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham. At one point, they even paid homage to the 1950s TV show by playing its theme tune, although you would have to have been a certain age to recognise it.
However traditional the story, there was nothing ordinary about this performance. It was like watching a rock panto on steroids. The depth of talent amongst this 11 strong cast was just amazing. The versatility, the musicality and the comedic acting ability were simply superb. Somehow, they even managed to incorporate a James Bond tribute, which you’d need to see to believe.
We laughed with so much audience interaction and enjoyed many rock classics. It’s hard to single out any one performance, but for me, Robins version of Meat Loafs, “I would do anything for love,” sent shivers down my spine. I lost count of the number of times a performer played a different musical instrument and couldn’t believe that 2.5 hours just flew by.
Treat yourself for Christmas, you will not be disappointed.
